Way
back when, before we had SUV Limos in Detroit, the closet thing
you could find to a Limousine was a horse and buggy. Detroit
has come a long way from its fur trapping days when it was a
trading post and settlement for French soldiers, traders and
missionaries. Recently the new ballparks brought the people back
downtown. The perfect night in Detroit consists of two center
ice Red Wings tickets, good friends, and a limousine or party
bus so you don't have to drink and drive. Before we
get off the subject lets talk about Detroit's
fascinating history.
The vision of its founder, Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac, was for this "fort
on the strait" (the meaning of Detroit's French name) to grow into a thriving
trade center. What he could not have known is that not only would the post succeed,
but the settlement would eventually become the anchor of what is now a tri-county
area with four million, ethnically diverse people.
The late 1800s
brought the first horseless carriage and an interest by city
businesses to bolster Detroit as a convention town. While it
took a few decades, the city began to attract visitors for summer
vacationing as well as appeal to various industrial businesses.
Business was booming in the 1920s but the Great Depression put
a temporary halt to its growth. However, by the 1940s, Detroit
was known as one of the national leaders in many industrial fields,
including salt products, electric refrigeration, seeds, adding
machines, stove manufacturing, and, of course, automobiles (limousines).
